Owning my own business was something that I had always wanted. So when I saved enough money and invested in a franchise I felt my dreams had come true. I felt that I was on the road to financial freedom. I could not have been more wrong. These are the top four reasons why I left my franchise for the direct sales and home business industry.1. I got paid last. How could this be? I owned the business and I’m doing the work, but the franchise company got paid first. Let me give you an example of what I experienced: The business makes $10k in a month. The franchise gets paid first at 20% ($2000) for franchise fees right off the top. The bank is paid second, at 30% for the loan ($3000). The landlord is paid third for rent of $2000. Then you have the employees, electricity and other expenses. The last person to be paid was myself with a profit of approx. $500-$1000 a month. Not exactly financial freedom! In this situation who is making the money? The franchise, the landlord and the bank.In the home business industry who gets paid first? Me, that’s right. Now of course I have monthly expenses, but I am not paid last. The reality is that traditional brick and mortar businesses have high overhead that a virtual or home based business does not have.2. I felt like I had a job. When looking for a franchise many people think that owning the business will give them more free time. Employee issues are a problem with many franchise businesses. Sick employees or ones who simply do not show up for work leave you with an additional shift to cover, many times with very short notice. This is what happens in many situations and exactly what happened in mine. I was back to working a minimum wage job. So, if you are looking at investing in a cleaning franchise, for example, make sure you like to clean! In the home business industry of course I have to work, but, the hours are much more flexible and as I increased my income I was able to outsource what I did not enjoy doing.3. I was stuck. When I opened a franchise I never thought that I would feel stuck. Remember, starting a business was my dream…an opportunity to have the life I had always wanted. But, I was stuck, stuck to one location. I could not just pick up my franchise and move it to a new place, if I wanted to live there for a few years. The home business and direct sales industry gave me this flexibility. The ability to move, or travel anywhere I wanted as long as I had an Internet and phone connection. I no longer feel stuck I can move anytime I want to!4. I was limited. In any franchise you are limited by the company in many ways. I was limited on how I could advertise, what products I could sell, and the services that I could offer. I had ideas that I wanted to try to raise my income but could not try because of the franchise contract restrictions. In the home business and direct sales industry I can run my business as I see fit. I can advertise how I want, sell what I want and if I want to change something I do not need approval. My business is no longer limited. When opening a franchise I felt like I was on the right track until I experienced it. I learned a lot about the franchise industry. Knowing what I know now, I would not consider another franchise. I found everything that I was missing in my franchise, in my home business. A virtual or home based business simply gives you the best odds of success with the least amount of risk, the most flexibility in your time and can be run from anywhere. This is why I left my franchise and never looked back!
